About Us

MoneyMob Talkabout is a not-for-profit organisation with a vision to empower Aboriginal people and communities to achieve economic wellbeing and self-determination. We operate a money support hub in the APY Lands, with a permanent base at Pukatja, which provides a one-stop-shop for local community members to interact with the broader economy in a safe and supportive environment. We regularly provide outreach to all communities across the APY Lands, and we have offices in the communities of Ernabella (Pukatja) and Mimili.

Ensuring Aboriginal people are at the heart of our services drives our success, and by tuning into each person's unique story, together we can discover new opportunities for growth and healing.

We're a young organisation that's achieved big things. Our advocacy work on unconscionable mobile phone sales to Indigenous clients led directly to the imposition of Australia's second-largest corporate fine. We've had over half a million dollars in debt waived for our clients since 2018.

That’s why we’re looking for great financial counselling case workers.

You’ll contribute to our vision by developing culturally safe, tailored case plans to assist Aboriginal clients and their families to achieve their individual financial goals and address vulnerabilities. You’ll advocate for them in relation to entitlements, debts and unfair contracts, and work alongside them to achieve a sustainable financial position.

The successful applicant should have:

  • Diploma of Financial Counselling, Bachelor of Social Work, a Certificate IV in Community Services,  or equivalent qualification/experience.
  • Willingness to learn on the job and complete the Diploma of Financial Counselling (if you don’t have it already)
  • Minimum of two years experience in community services work with complex clients (experience with ATSI clients and/or in a remote setting highly desirable)
  • Skills in all stages of client case planning and case conferencing with multi-disciplinary professionals.
  • The ability to work calmly from a strengths based, client centred and trauma-informed perspective. You’ll know how to sensitively establish rapport and determine what underlies presenting issues.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a basic knowledge of the Australian legal system for effective advocacy
  • Great organisational, administration and IT skills using cloud-based systems.
  • A current unrestricted drivers’ licence and right to work in Australia

Please note: Northern Territory and APY Lands requirements mandate triple vaccination (including booster shot) against COVID-19.

In your first six months, you’ll:

  • Undertake cultural awareness training
  • Enrol in and start working towards the Diploma of Financial Counselling (if not held)
  • Be introduced to and commence travel two weeks per month to APY Lands communities
  • Develop well-formulated case plans for your caseload of 15 to work towards their financial resilience goals and build understanding of the connections between money and wellbeing
  • Under supervision, negotiate payment plans, debt waivers and reductions for clients with creditors and external dispute resolution bodies
  • Advocate for and ensure that clients are receiving correct payments, entitlements and concessions
  • Work with individuals, families and other colleagues/support workers from a holistic, trauma informed perspective to address issues underlying financial stress, for example - lack of financial literacy, gambling, financial abuse, substance misuse, DV.
  • Assist with a range of other issues as relevant including applications for financial administration for vulnerable people, bankruptcy, tax returns.
  • Ensure administration is maintained to a high standard
  • Celebrate successes big and small!

We want to help you, too! As part of our commitment to learning and development, MoneyMob will reimburse the full cost of the Financial Counselling Diploma upon completion.

As a MoneyMob team member you'll enjoy:

  • Attractive remuneration $90,554 - $94,646 (inclusive of leave loading - and depending on qualifications and experience) PLUS super and remote salary sacrificing options
  • Relocation assistance
  • 6 weeks annual leave
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • $500 annual wellbeing payment
  • 5 days mandated annual breaks (mini-break)
  • 2 days per month additional 'outreach leave' to compensate for being away over weekends
  • Training/education opportunities (gain valuable financial counselling knowledge)
  • External professional supervision and support
